Delilah leaves her job at Penny’s Diner and her Aunt Betsy upon news of being accepted to The Verge Dance Intensive in San Diego, CA. Her Aunt gives her a book of her late mothers before she departs, titled “Merlore”. Delilah always knew her mother was fascinated with mythology, and feels a special connection to the subject. Delilah starts her dance intensive in San Diego, starts working at Joes bar, and becomes friends with Channing, Zan, and Rezzy. Delilah feels increasingly called to the water, spending lots of time by the ocean, and sailing with Channing. Delilah falls in love with Channing, and this activates her mermaid genes. She changes for the first time when getting in the shower. When she is more confused than ever, her Aunt Betsy discovers one of her late mothers journals, containing her lived experience. Her aunt sends Delilah this journal. This is much more information than she had been privvy to, only having read and explored the book her aunt had given her upon leaving Missoula, “Merlore”. In her mothers private journal, she discovers her mother was a mermaid, and that her mother turned for the first time shortly after falling in love with her husband, Delilah’s dad, Leighton. She conceals this at first from Channing, but Channing catches on upon noticing Delilah’s distance from the thing she has felt most pulled to, the ocean. She eventually opens up to Channing about her mermaid nature, and learns from Channing about sirens. She opens up to Zan and Rezzy as well, and they bond over their mystical natures. In terms of Delilah’s dance program, things go well. Delilah dances everyday, and works most nights at Joe’s. The end of summer live performance soon comes around, and the program uses a nearby gallery space. Here, Delilah meets the gallery owner and artist, Karlee. Karlee is a mermaid too. Delilah and Karlee form a friendship, filled with late night ocean swims, and family dinners with Karlee’s parents, all mermaids. Delilah feels a sense of mythical family. Channing is intertwined as well, Karlee and her family being accepting of Channing knowing. Eventually, someone from the community spots Delilah when she is in her mermaid form. They confront her later on at Joe’s bar. Startled by this encounter, Channing and Delilah decide to disappear for a little while, going on an extended sailing trip. On this sailing trip, Delilah and Channing uncover a secret, Delilah’s mom is alive. They meet her while out at sea, in her mermaid form. She learns that her Dad was human, and perished at sea by means of a siren. A siren lured her father to death when Ana and Leighton were on a sailing trip together.

Channing moved from Los Angeles, CA to San Diego shortly after graduating from college. They studied business, aiming to take a safe career path. Their true love however, has always been sailing. Channing teaches sailing classes at the San Diego marina, and at night works at Joe’s as a bartender. Channing is an interesting one, as they know about sirens, and were never shocked or surprised. Since they were little they’ve believed in magic. Channing’s first encounter with a siren was when they befriended Zan on her way through California. At this time, Channing needed a roommate for rent, and Zan decided to stay and fill the spot. Zan opened up Channing about sirening after a while, and they’ve continued to have a very close friendship. Channing knows not to ever tell anyone about Zan’s siren abilities, that it would risk Zan’s life. Channing is a flirt, usually always talking to someone. Channing hasn’t ever dated someone seriously, or really been in love. Channing has a siren affect on people, without trying, and while being human. Everyone loves Channing. When Delilah walks into the bar at Joes, things change. Time stops moving, Channing notices Delilah unlike they’ve ever noticed someone before. Eventually, Delilah asks for a job at Joe’s. They aren’t technically hiring, but Channing works behind the scenes to make it so they are. Channing wants Delilah to work there, and does what they need to do with their boss to make it happen. Channing and Delilah become fast friends, and sooner than later Channing is taking Delilah out sailing. Channing falls in love with Delilah steadily, and loses interest in others. Shortly after their most passionate night together, Delilah stops showing interest in Channing, in sailing, in the ocean. Channing is perplexed, and pushes Delilah to talk to them. To open up. Eventually Delilah divulges her mermaid nature. Channing is surprised, as they weren’t expecting to encounter yet another mystical creature. But, Channing isn’t phased. Channing is rarely phased. This doesn’t change anything for Channing, and they support Delilah’s discovery of her truth, going through her mothers books and journals with her. Channing and Delilah even go on a trip back to her Aunt Betsy’s in Missoula to read more journals and books of her mothers. Channing and Delilah find a way to still go sailing, just them two, while concealing Delilah’s nature. Then, Delilah is spotted. Delilah is spotted with her tail by none other than Lacy, the woman who was obsessed with Channing after a one night stand in episode one. Lacy is a regular at Joe’s bar, and after this one night stand, Rezzy begrudingly helped out Channing by sirening Lacy to forget about Channing. Somehow, Lacy spotted Delilah with her tail, and is now confronting Delilah about it at Joe’s bar. Spooked by this encounter, and with Rezzy and Zan being MIA at the time, Channing and Delilah decide to go on an extended sailing trip together.

Oh Zan. Zan is the most chaotic character on this show. We love her. Zan grew up in Carmel, CA. Zan was born a siren, and siren she did. Her parents died when she was only three years old, and she was able to siren strangers to take care of her through her childhood. Eventually, she learned the art of sirening to a T. She used it for survival, and for love. Eventually, she sirened her way into her own apartment, around the age of 18. She met a woman named Sienna, and fell madly in love with her, truly, for the first time. She didn’t siren Sienna, she couldn’t. For the first time she didn’t want to siren someone. Sienna and Zan dated for years, Sienna moved in with her. But eventually, Sienna shattered Zan’s heart and left her for someone else. Zan has never been the same since this. After this heartbreak Zan went on a roadtrip around California, finding her way to San Diego. In San Diego, Zan meets Channing at Joe’s bar. They become friends, something Zan had never experienced before. Zan experiences platonic love for the first time, and similarly does not want to siren Channing. Channing was actively looking for a roommate at the time, and so Zan ends up moving in. Zan actually does pay rent, but how she gets her money is less than honest. Zan sirens numerous people throughout season one, using them for money, food, clothing, experiences, companionship, but never sex. Zan has never slept with anyone since Sienna, and has no desire to. And although morally gray, even Zan has boundaries, and sirening someone to sleep with is far too far. But everything else? Great. Zan has bouts of existentialism, pondering her existence. Zan struggles with a void. Later on in season one, Sienna appears with her new partner. Zan sees them at a coffee shop. This sends Zan into a spiral, unsure of how to proceed. Should she confront Sienna? Profess her love? Siren the husband to forget Sienna? Leave them alone? ….. Siren Sienna?? This situation takes over Zan’s life. Rather than dealing with it, Zan puts her nose in Rezzy’s business, with the reappearance of Gwen and her husband. Zan takes it upon herself to siren Gwen to breakup with her husband and fall in love with Rezzy.
During all of this, Zan is MIA from Channing and Delilah when they need her most, in the moment Delilah is spotted by Lacy.

Rezzy starts off season one acclimating to her life without her roommate and best friend, Gwen. Gwen lived with Rezzy in her two bedroom apartment, but after becoming engaged, Gwen moved in with her fiance. Rezzy is happy for Gwen, but it’s bittersweet, considering that she was .. in love with her. Rezzy is a siren, but sirens as little as possible.
Rezzy and Zan are best friends, bonding over their siren nature when they first met in San Diego at Joe’s. Zan and Rezzy have quite different relationships to their siren nature. Rezzy disapproves of Zan’s siren lifestyle. Despite this, they still have a close friendship. When Zan first told Rezzy that she had told Channing about them, Rezzy was pissed, because her parents had emphasized strongly never to tell anyone. Rezzy’s parents always said that bad people would take them and use them for bad things. Eventually though, after furthering her friendship with Channing, Rezzy formed a strong trust with them. Rezzy grew up with a strong family in Arizona, who were all aware of her siren abilities when she was born, and acted quickly to create a supportive household for her. They taught her about sirening from a young age, and how it was unethical. Rezzy only sirens for good, and even then, thinks things through to a fault. Rezzy is obsessed with being good , it is very important to her, and she puts a lot of pressure on herself for it. She feels some shame about her siren nature, about her ability to control others at the drop of a hat. The only reason her family didn’t turn into her servants is that sirening does not work on your own blood. Her family first noticed her siren nature when she was a child, at toy stores having everything handed to her by everyone. In season one, Rezzy watches as Channing gets everyone she wants and doesn’t want, as a human. Rezzy has always struggled with love, and really wants to find it, without sirening. She goes on a few dates, they don’t go super well. She still misses Gwen. Eventually, she reaches out to Gwen to hangout, after a long period of silence. They go for coffee, and it goes as well as it could. Rezzy starts to let go of the notion of them getting back together, maybe it’s not meant to be.
Behind the scenes, Zan sirens Gwen to breakup with her husband and to fall in love with Rezzy. Rezzy falls into a whirlwind romance with Gwen, over the moon, not realizing that Gwen has been sirened to love her. It’s during this period of infatuation that Rezzy goes MIA from Channing and Delilah and Zan at the time of Lacy spotting Delilah’s tail.
